Keralan Kathakali Dance

In the evening, we had tickets for a Kathakali show at the Kochi Kolklore Odium. Kathakali is the famous dance drama of Kerala which is only performed in this state. Telling the stories of the Hindu epics, the heavily made up dancers dressed in traditional costumes use a range of facial and hand movements to bring drama to the stories and create a piece of highly entertaining theatre.

There are 9 emotions conveyed all through facial expressions, sign language and movement:

Sringaram: Love, pleasure, delight

Hasyam: Comic, laugh, mocking

Karunam: Pathetic, sad

Raudram: Anger, fury

Viram: Heroic, vigor, enthusiasm

Bhayanakam: Fear, concern, worry

Bibhatsam: Disgust, repulsive

Adbhutam: Wonder, marvelous, curious

Shantam: Peace, tranquility
